A first!

We had another first in our house yesterday .. our first broken bone. It was full of all the drama and chaos and crying and tears that you would expect from a 9 year old girl!

She was riding her scooter with neighborhood friends when it got stuck and down she went. Of course, it was at the 5:00 hour. She insisted to me that she broke her wrist - and I was believing her (despite her drama queen tendencies, she was acting and complaining in ways I have never seen before) so I called hubby and told him COME HOME NOW!

The two of them went off to the Urgent Care where the x-ray confirmed that she had fractured her wrist. The fracture is pretty far across the bone and a little bit more would have been a complete break.

She came home wrapped up and with a sling. Tomorrow we will call to try to get a cast. She is already set on having a pink one and has insisted after the cast we immediately go buy a marker so everyone can sign it. All in all, she held up pretty well when she got home. She is, however, bummed that she can't participate in swimming, diving, or other such activities. But, this mom is grateful that it wasn't any worse than a fractured wrist.

Busy, busy!

Well, maybe not that busy, but it feels busy to me! Lots of knitting going on, and driving, and swim lessons, and piano lessons, and shopping and all sorts of stuff like that. I wish I had pictures to show you, but alas I don't. Someday ...

Anyway, today we had fun! My cousin called earlier in the week to see if I could help her make curtains. Sure, no problem, yeah, come on over, I said! Totally forgetting the part where, you know, I've NEVER made curtains before in my life! LOL! Today she bought the fabric, twice! Because the first fabric went out the window when we went shopping again to get a liner for it and she walked to the canvas and said (so wisely) that couldn't she use that and then we wouldn't need a liner? Yes! And yes, that would be easier since I've also never used liner on curtains LOL!

Then we came home nad started to cut it. Except I was being stupid and took forever and then didn't even cut it right (it started right at the top and somehow gained 2 inches of width by the end. Oops). But she left and I finished cutting and also the fabric lost it's 2 extra inches. I'm under strict orders to not just sew them for her - which was totally what I was going to do but apparently my cousin is a mind reader and she knew! LOL! I just cut them, so when she comes over, they'll be ready to be sewn. Okay, okay, I plan to iron them too, but that's okay, because I only promised to not finish them and ironing is not finishing them right.

If she lets me, I'll show you the finished the product. But I think once we get started it will feel less scary. And it would feel a lot less scary if I were making them for say, my kid's room because I could screw them up and that would be okay ... which has me thinking that both the kids' rooms need new curtains so if this goes well, I think I will be making more. And if this doesn't go well ... well, they haven't noticed they need new curtains so the old ones will stay LOL! =)

Sharing

Things have seemed really surreal lately. There is more bad news than good, which can certainly wear on a person and definitely does wear on me.
But, this song is one I listen to in order to help me feel a bit better about things. So I'm sharing it with you!

We Live by Superchick

There's a cross on the side of the road
Where a mother lost a son
How could she know that the morning he left
Would be the last time she'd trade with him for a little more time
So she could say she loved him one last time
And hold him tight
But with life we never know
When we're coming up to the end of the road
So what do we do then
With tragedy around the bend?

We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love

We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love

There's a man who waits for the tests
To see if the cancer has spread yet
And now he asks, "So why did I wait to live till it was time to die?"
If I could have the time back how I'd live
Life is such a gift
So how does the story end?
Well this is your story and it all depends
So don't let it become true
Get out and do what we were meant to do

We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love

We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love

Waking up to another dark morning
People are mourning
The weather in life outside is storming
But what would it take for the clouds to break
For us to realize each day is a gift somehow, someway?
So get our heads up out of the darkness
And spark this new mindset and start to live life cuz it ain't gone yet
And tragedy is a reminder to take off the blinders
And wake up and live the life we're supposed to take up
Moving forward with all our heads up cuz life is worth living

We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love

(repeat chorus 4 times)

In memory of ...

Aunt Mary.

Aunt Mary
(October 15, 1944 - February 20, 2009)

This blog wouldn't be here today if it weren't for my Aunt Mary.

You see, my Aunt Mary, who had always been a cool aunt in my opinion, helped get me starting on my crafting addiction! When I had my first little girl I commented to a few people how I wanted to learn to sew to make her pretty dresses. Most people smiled and politely commented along the lines of "That's nice. So, how's the weather?" But not Aunt Mary. Oh no. When I mentioned it to her she told me she had a sewing machine I could borrow, so I wouldn't have to go out and buy my own in case I tried it and never liked it. Well, since I know have 4 machines in my possession, that clearly never happened. But that first stitch I took was on Aunt Mary's machine.

And then a few years later I started talking about wanting to knit. Again, most people politely smiled and commented that that was nice and moved on. But nope, not Aunt Mary. She came over to my house, helped me learn to knit. And after I made my little practice square, she didn't even bash an eyelash when I showed her the first thing I wanted to make was some baby booties and by the way, could she help me figure out how to knit with 4 needles at a time? She never tried to tell me to pick something easier, but she showed me how to do it!

When I went to her house, she would show me her projects - the finished ones, the ones in progress. She always asked what I was working on and sometimes I would bring them with, knowing I would see her and knowing that I could whip it out and show it to her and she would ohh and ahh with me.

I told my husband this morning that it's all Aunt Mary's fault that I know have an enitre crafting room, a few sewing machines, more needles than one person needs and a bit of a yarn stash! Because, well, she helped me take the plunge and learn those skills. She was one of the people who understood why I just had to buy more yarn and needles and patterns and fabric and all the other fun stuff that I buy too much of!

But it didn't stop there. Aunt Mary was a reader. So when the yarn talk was out of the way, we'd talk books. What have you read lately? Was it good? Should I get it? If I was really lucky, she'd say hold on a second and go grab the book and lend it to me to read. And I knew that if Aunt Mary liked it, I would like it too! Her daughter (who is my age and was my barbie playing partner for quite some years) is a reader too. So get the three of us together and there was always book talk involved! I loved it.

But even before I fell in love with all things crafty and with books, she was a fun aunt. I LOVED going to her house. Heck, as an adult I loved going to her house. She was always upbeat, happy, and laughing. She would always welcome us into her house. And if you stopped by to say hi, well, my husband knew you could never just stop by. It always turned into long visits! I loved it.

My Aunt Mary, in a word, rocked. And every time I sit down to sew something up, or pick up needles and begin to knit, I will remember her. And when I read a great book, I will think of her and how much she would have loved it. Because even though she is not with us anymore, she will still be with me. And I'm so glad I have so many great memories of her to carry around in my heart.

Good-bye Aunt Mary. You were well loved. And you will be greatly missed. Thank you for all you have taught me and shown me. Thank you for always supporting me and being there for me.

Superstitious...

Okay, call me superstitious ... I'm okay with that ... but the last post was number 666. Since I doubt I'll be back to posting until next week sometime, I just needed to make 667 so it didn't sit at that number for too long.
I know, I'm crazy. It's okay. I accept it =)
